Congresswoman joins raucous N.J. governor’s race to take over for Murphy

U.S. Rep. Mikie Sherrill, an Essex County Democrat set to begin her seventh year in Congress, announced Monday she has officially declared her long-anticipated campaign for New Jersey governor, giving the packed race another seasoned candidate as it enters a critical stretch.
A former U.S. Navy pilot and federal prosecutor, Sherrill is the sixth major Democrat — and 11th candidate in all — to jump into next year’s contest to succeed Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy. She is also the only woman from either party running.
